The Occupy Poster Project was born out of a love for print. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to curate and create a body of screenprinted posters that could be utilized by the people currently protesting. We got in touch with some of our favorite designers and gave them only a few stipulations: Design whatever you’d like, make it 20″ x 30″, and 1 color. The project is ongoing as we continue to get in touch with designers to contribute, and we are currently shipping these prints out to organizations all over the world. 25% of all sales on this site will be donated to the Occupy Wall Street Organization.

Just finished a fun redesign for a Charleston staple…

Tucked away on charming Queen Street, Poogan’s Porch is one of Charleston’s oldest independent culinary establishments, with a fresh approach to Lowcountry cuisine. Recognized by Martha Stewart Living, Wine Spectator and The Travel Channel, this beautifully restored Victorian house is the perfect southern spot for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch. Since opening in 1976, Poogan’s Porch has been a favorite of well-known celebrities, politicians, tourists and locals alike who rave about this Southern institution. Whether it’s a warm homemade buttermilk biscuit and sausage gravy for brunch, a bowl of she-crab soup for lunch, or our signature buttermilk fried chicken for dinner, your meal at Poogan’s will be unforgettable.

The new look needed to pay homage to the restaurant’s well-known and beloved past, but also offer a fresh, more sophisticated and modernized nod to its future. We began with the logo and basic identity, then moved into signage, menus, ads, and wrapped up last week with the launch of Poogan’s new website.

Lots of local talent involved in this project…

Jenny Badman nailed the tone with some great copy. Limelight Sign Co. didn’t flinch when asked if we could build a sign out of floorboards. (Not only did they do it, but they used wood reclaimed from the restaurant itself.) Paul & Jason hooked us up with tasty photography. And Dwarf Dog Chuck destroyed the website development.

In a nutshell, Visualive is a network of HDTVs located in businesses and public spaces around Charleston, all connected to a central interface – the Visualive.tv website. Think of it as an array of indoor digital billboards, accessible to anybody, to share anything. Users submit content ranging from personal shout-outs to advertisements to event countdowns, all to be displayed when & where they want, on the screens of their choosing.

The whole thing is so simple it’s genius. It’s green, it’s hassle-free, and it’s immediate. Look for these dudes to take over.

Some cool stuff coming down the pipe, but for now we’ve got a new logo and a slew of t-shirts hot off the presses (or out from under the screens, as is more the case), just in time for the summertime crowds. All are printed on American Apparel, and we’ve even got some GROM shirts for the lil’ up-and-coming wave riders. Stay tuned…

A couple months ago I got hitched. Aside from celebrating the beginning of a lifelong adventure with my best friend (I’d be remiss to not mention the obvious), the occasion also gave me the rare chance to be my own client. Much to my <del>fiance’s</del> wife’s credit, she handed over full creative control of our invitations, saying simply “I’m sure I’ll love whatever you come up with.”

As much as it might have been fun to use a bunch of blackletter typefaces and neon inks, I figured it’d be best to reign it in and create something that felt like a merger of both our personalities. The end result takes that idea literally by sandwiching simple elements & textures which represent the two of us as individuals to create a finished package that’s distinctly “us.” That’s my design mumbo-jumbo explanation, anyway. Really, I just wanted to put her in a cameo and myself in a plaid shirt, and somehow print it on actual wood.

A huge shout to Virginia over at Sideshow Press for helping suss out the printing, especially the main invitation piece – letterpressed cherry veneer duplexed with Crane Lettra off-white. So rad. That chica knows her stuff.

Figured I’d keep the ball rolling with groomsman’s gifts, and designed them each a logo to be etched onto a flask. I won’t bother trying to explain any of them, but each icon is based on an experience we shared together. $500 to the first person* who can correctly guess the story behind all six.

*who isn’t named Kyle, Bryce, Drue, Jonathan, Justin, or Sharpie.

Just wrapped up a new identity and website for Celadon – an in-the-know, vintage-modern-rustic-chic (I just made that up) home furnishings & accessories store in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, right over the bridge from downtown Charleston. They’ve been around since 1994 and have quite a following, so chances are good most of you Charlestonians are familiar (if not lounging on a Celadon purchase as we speak), but if you’re not, and the words “rooms to go” make you cringe, pay this place a visit.

Celadon seeks to bring the Charleston market an innovative, eclectic, fresh take on home furnishings. Quality, solid-wood furniture built with clean, simplistic, European lines are the bones, while unique found objects from buying trips around the world give this locally owned store a global point of view and bohemian flair that feels anything but contrived. Rustic wood and natural fibers meet an industrial space, antiques from India meet Provincial inspired pieces, and a neutral pallet meets bold textiles and accessories. Celadon is masculine but feminine, current but timeless, chic but comfortable, sophisticated but inviting.

About a year ago I was approached by London-based publisher Cicada and asked to represent Charleston in their upcoming guidebook “Graphic USA.” The book is a followup to their first book, “Graphic Europe,” comprised of 31 chapters written & illustrated by 31 designers in various European cities. Each designer pens an introductory page, then a slew of personal “best of” picks – restaurants, bars, shopping, cultural events, green spaces, etc. – accompanied by an assembly of illustrations/designs which represent their unique, individual take on where they live. From Cicada…

Abundantly illustrated and lovingly laid out, Graphic USA is like having hip, insightful chaperones in multiple cities across the United States: graphic designers living in 25 metropolises (from capitals of cool like New York, Portland, Miami and L.A. to less predictable locales such as Anchorage, Charleston, St. Louis and Phoenix) were invited to write and illustrate mini-guides to their stomping grounds. With listings for places to stay, bars, restaurants, galleries and clubs, the book gives readers everything they need to live it up like natives in the know.

A couple weeks ago I received some advance copies, and to say the book turned out rad is an understatement. Each chapter has an intended feel all its own, and the diversity of locations translates beautifully through the unique lens of each contributor. There’s some serious talent throwing down in this thing and I’m proud to be representing Chucktown. The book goes on sale this March and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.

They ranged from relatively quick & painless (Leadership) to a three-cup-of-coffee marathon (Opportunity). Click on the images above for a more detailed look.

A pat on the back to the super-talented Leslie Ryann McKellar (or McKiller, as I’m toying with calling her) for perfect starting photos. She captured every detail we needed and disregarded every detail we didn’t – probably not an easy thing to do.

And just for contrast’s sake, scroll down for the raw, original pics.

For those of you who weren’t around or don’t remember, The Village Tavern over in Mt. Pleasant (South Carolina, for all you non-local readers… hi Grandma!) was a popular live-music-focused watering hole which died an unfortunately slow death and finally shut its doors in the summer of 2010. Now she’s back from the dead, and with the same heavy focus on live music the new owners are looking to continue on in the sprit of the old Tavern that we all knew and loved. Just got the first batch of shirts back from the printer – 2 color on a “Heather Forest” 50/50 American Apparel tee. So stop by, pick one up, and check out the fully-renovated joint. The burger I had there the other night was truly the best in recent memory, and everything else I saw come out of the kitchen looked pretty damn good to boot. So go hungry.
