About a year ago I was approached by London-based publisher Cicada and asked to represent Charleston in their upcoming guidebook “Graphic USA.” The book is a followup to their first book, “Graphic Europe,” comprised of 31 chapters written & illustrated by 31 designers in various European cities. Each designer pens an introductory page, then a slew of personal “best of” picks – restaurants, bars, shopping, cultural events, green spaces, etc. – accompanied by an assembly of illustrations/designs which represent their unique, individual take on where they live. From Cicada…

Abundantly illustrated and lovingly laid out, Graphic USA is like having hip, insightful chaperones in multiple cities across the United States: graphic designers living in 25 metropolises (from capitals of cool like New York, Portland, Miami and L.A. to less predictable locales such as Anchorage, Charleston, St. Louis and Phoenix) were invited to write and illustrate mini-guides to their stomping grounds. With listings for places to stay, bars, restaurants, galleries and clubs, the book gives readers everything they need to live it up like natives in the know.

A couple weeks ago I received some advance copies, and to say the book turned out rad is an understatement. Each chapter has an intended feel all its own, and the diversity of locations translates beautifully through the unique lens of each contributor. There’s some serious talent throwing down in this thing and I’m proud to be representing Chucktown. The book goes on sale this March and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.

Current is a new electric car dealership opening up in Charleston with a refreshing vibe: the staff’s focus is more on educating the customer about electric transportation, and less on making sure you walk out the door with a new set of keys in your pocket. Gil got in touch looking for a conceptual illustration which would represent not just the showroom’s basic structure (which didn’t exist yet), but more so the bright and educational “Current experience.”

Always an awesome experience to team up with the interactive gurus over at Blue Ion. Not only do these guys (and gal) really know their stuff, but they’re just plain fun to be around as well. They recently got in touch looking for five conceptual illustrations to help represent Newbury – a new mixed-use development in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh, PA. When the work was done I consolidated each Photoshop file (see: mess) into two or three transparent layers (a foreground, middleground, and background), which they then brought to life with the parallax effect. Definitely a cool little touch. Check out the end result here.

As previously mentioned, I was stoked & jazzed & pumped & amped when they asked me to design the poster for the event. In honor of the venue we went with a gig poster sort of vibe, and this afternoon I cracked open a giant FedEx box to reveal another killer screenprinting job from The Half and Half. The posters are three color on 100 lb. bright white natural stock, trimmed to 18″ x 24″. Thanks again to everybody over at Pecha Kucha. Had a blast teaming up.

Hope to see you all Wednesday night!
